Intel Light Peak Made For Apple?

Intel might have unveiled its 10 gigabyte Light Peak connection at IDF, but it looks like things might not be what they seem. Initially pitched at as Intel-made design, recent leaks have indicated that this fiber optic connection is the direct result of talks between Apple founder Steve Jobs and Intel chief Paul Otellini. Rumors indicate that Apple wants a single, high-speed connection standard to replace FireWire, USB and also Ethernet. Regardless of who came up with the idea, it’s certainly going to be interesting when Light Peak hits the consumer market, and we certainly are looking forward to it.

UltraMixer Free, Mac Mixer

UltraMixer, as the name suggests, is a mixing program aimed at DJs. Fitted with two channels a mixer and library, it allows you to store your tracks and play them consecutively, adjusting sound settings along the way.
I found the interface pretty clear, if not a little dull, yet first time DJs will probably find it handy to get grips with the different elements. Use of typical features like the crossfader, equalizer or cue are just like you would expect on a regular mixer.
The library is well organized in a tree structure, and allows you to keep all your different tracks the way you're most comfortable with.
If there is one big turnoff, according to me, it's the installation process. I found it way too long and suspect that it's intended to encourage you of going for the more advanced, and more expensive versions of UltraMixer. Effectively you'll find there is only one file to download, which contains all three versions: professional, basic and free. You'll need a key to activate the demo, and the process just takes even more time.
If the installation wasn't so complicated, I'd recommend UltraMixer as a good all around mixer for aspiring DJs. However for now I'd recommend turning to other programs.

CARRIER Wheelchair entertains virtually any terrain

Wheelchairs help the disabled get up and about, but many times they are thwarted by poor planning and layout of an area that makes it disabled unfriendly. The CARRIER Wheelchair can be said to be the Hummer of them all, where it is more than capable of traversing just about any terrain or situation, be it stairs or steep inclines. This is made possible by its frame that was specially formed to maneuver over a commode, while a "trap door" mechanism opens up that allows you to use a toilet without having to get up and about yourself. Unfortunately, the CARRIER Wheelchair looks set to be destined as a concept for the forseeable future. Let's hope the situation changes sometime down the road.
Archos 9 tablet due October 22 for $499
![a9_front_1[1] a9_front_1[1]](http://www.crunchgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/a9_front_11.jpg)
Here’s a little more info on the Archos 9 Tablet. Apparently it’ll be available here in the US on October 22nd, the same day Windows 7 is available. The price tag is pretty aggressive at $499, too.
That’ll get you an Atom Z510 CPU at 1.1GHz, a 9-inch touchscreen with 1024×600 resolution, 1GB of RAM, 60GB hard drive, Windows 7 Starter, four hours of battery life, and a weight of about 1.75 pounds.
UMPC Portal has a video of the device in action. Looks pretty nice. It seems a little sluggish but some of that might get hammered out before the official release. It’ll never be SUPER fast, though, considering the form factor, but perhaps it’d get a nice place on your coffee table.
Bionic Eye app for the iPhone 3GS with Augmented Reality

Bionic Eye for the iPhone 3GS does at least save you from squeezing into some Lycra and leaping aboard the nearest push-bike. Currently available in the App Store, Bionic Eye is another augmented reality (AR) app which overlays information about the immediate environment onto a real-time camera view. In this case, it uses a POI database including restaurants, WiFi hotspots, subway stations and more.
The POI database currently covers US cities, together with the UK, France and Tokyo, and they claim to have over 100,000 different entries. In fact the app will also work with the previous-gen iPhone models, together with the iPod touch, but since they lack the digital compass you’ll only get a Google Maps layout, rather than the AR.
On-screen, Bionic Eye shows any POIs from a selected category within 1km, rotating as you move around the streets; one tap, and you’re into Google Maps for turn-by-turn directions. If you point the iPhone 3GS down at the ground, you’ll see a blue arrow with distance, direction and POI details.
You can download Bionic Eye nowfor $1 [iTunes link].

Google is continuously enhancing its mobile services, and the latest to get an upgrade is Google Mobile App for Windows Mobile.
As of today, owners of WM phones have Google Mobile App with My Location and thus they can get local results without typing their location. In case you don’t want it, the My Location feature can be disabled in the Advanced Options menu.
Other new features that Google Mobile App for Windows Mobile brings include Google Suggest (offering suggestions to complete your search queries faster) and Search with Maps (you need to have Google Maps installed for this).

If you don’t have Google Mobile App on your phone, you can get the latest version from m.google.com.
Pantech SKY 'S.T. Dupont Phone

We don't mean to overdose you with Core i7 processor notebooks and desktops from Dell, so here's a little balance - Toshiba's latest flagship in the UK is their new 18.4" Qosmio X500 gaming notebook. This model will amble along at 1.6GHz in normal mode, although when you need that additional boost of power, up to 2.8GHz worth of speed can be squeezed out in Turbo Boost mode. Toshiba has already positioned this to be an entertainment system as well, where you get a 1080p display and a Blu-ray burner for high definition fans. Other specifications include HDMI connectivity, up to 8GB RAM, a maximum of 1TB hard drive, a backlit keyboard for those who love working in the dark, Harman Kardon speakers, a multi-touch trackpad, a webcam and NVIDIA's GeForce GTS 250M graphics processor for superior 3D performance. Prices have yet to be confirmed, although we do expect the Qosmio X500 to see action in the UK from late October onwards.

Starbucks Goes Mobile: Pay For Coffee With Your iPhone

Now available in the App Store, myStarbucks (iTunes Link) and Starbucks Card Mobile (iTunes Link) let users find their nearest Starbucks and manage their Starbucks Card. If you live near one of 16 stores in the Seattle or Bay Area, you can even pay for your purchases with the Starbucks Card Mobile app via barcode.
Starbucks is a little late to the store-locator game, as a number of unofficial applications — both free and paid — already exist to show store locations or keep track of your Starbucks Card balance, but the official apps offer a lot of functionality, great design, and an unbeatable price — free.

In myStarbucks, you can find the locations near you, either by entering in your address or letting the app use your iPhone or iPod touch’s built-in GPS or WiFi locator. You can search for stores based on certain factors, like drive-thru, operating hours (are they open now) and what type of food they offer. You can also add a store to your favorite’s list and call the store directly from the app or invite people in your address book to join you for a latte.
One of the cooler features is the ability create your own drink configurations — hot and cold –and save them. The order is viewable and you can show it to a barista if you are in a hurry. Hopefully, the pay via iPhone option is rolled out across more locations, because combined with the drink configuration tool, it would certainly make grabbing coffee more convenient.

Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB SATA 6.0Gbps hard-drive is world’s first
Seagate have announced the world’s first SATA 6Gbps hard-drive, the Barracuda XT, a huge chunk of 2TB capacity aimed at high-performance workstations. The Barracuda XT 2TB spins at 7,200rpm and is the first to feature the faster-speed SATA interface, though it’s also backward compatible with SATA 3.0Gbps and 1.5Gbps.

That’s useful, as right now there’s limited choice for motherboards with 6.0Gbps SATA interfaces. Currently you’re looking at a clutch of models from ASUS and Gigabyte, whom Seagate are seemingly promoting alongside the Barracuda XT. After all, what good is all that performance if you’re not going to take advantage of it.
The drive also has 64MB of cache, and uses four platters in order to squeeze all those bytes inside. Official pricing is expected to come in somewhere around $299.
Orange UK offers HTC Hero firmware update

Orange UK has just rolled out the ROM update for their HTC Hero, where it is touted to offer a boost in system speed, alongside touch-to-focus capability in the Hero’s camera. Orange has also tested the new software to make sure it is fully compatible with the network when released. As for T-Mobile, they claim that their update is more or less imminent, but nothing official has been heard from them yet as at press time.
Lacie Designer Portable DVD Burner

It’s hard to ever get bored of stuff from LaCie.
Sure the designs might not be the funkiest in town, but they’re simple and elegant, certainly something that a lot of folks appreciate.
Following that trend is the latest portable DVD burner released by the company, which was designed by Sam Hecht. The device is USB-powered, eliminating the need for the bulky AC adapter.
In terms of burn speeds, it supports DVD burn speeds up to 8x and CD burn speeds up to 24x, which isn’t too shabby.
The windows version will set you back $90, while the Mac version has a little premium (as always) and will be going for $120.
For your hard-earned cash, you’ll get the DVD burner, Toast 9 Basic (for Mac) or Creator Suite 10 with Lightscribe for Windows.
20+ Mac Apps to Increase Your Productivity
Task Management

Things ($49.95) — Cultured Code’s Things was easily the top choice on my Twitter followers’ lists of “best Mac productivity app.” Not only is the interface gorgeous (it won a 2009 Apple Design Award), the app is both simple and powerful.
Not only can you manage all your tasks on the desktop, the fantastic Things iPhone app is a great way to keep track of your tasks while on the go, as well as a fantastic portable task manager and to-do list.
The Hit List ($49.95) — After Things, The Hit List won my impromptu Twitter poll. Like things, The Hit List is elegant, but powerful. If you participated in MacHeist this year, you got a copy of The Hit List, and as a task-manager, this is one of my favorites. It syncs with iCal, makes it easy to add lists and tasks, as well as attaching and organizing notes onto certain items, and it has an interface that is uncluttered and easy to use.
The Hit List doesn’t have an iPhone app, though one is in the works.
OmniFocus ($79.95) — OmniFocus has been around for a long time, so of the three applications, it’s probably the most feature-rich. As a result, it also has the biggest learning curve — but if you are a strict GTD-devotee, it might just be the app for you. You can assign tasks via e-mail and OmniFocus will watch your inbox and automatically add tasks you send yourself to your OmniFocus inbox.
OmniFocus syncs with iCal and also has a great iPhone application for syncing, creating and managing tasks on the go.
All three of these apps offer a free-trial period, so play around with them and then choose what works best for your workflow.
Acer F1 Launching in October for Less Than $500
Acer F1 should be hitting the market on October 6, just like the rest of the Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphones. Aside from the cool design, F1 packs a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 3.8 inch touchscreen display (480 x 800 pixels), an accelerometer and a 5 megapixel autofocus camera. As far as connectivity is concerned, you get WiFi support, tri band HSPA, quad band GSM, while the memory is 512MB (ROM) and 256MB RAM. Aside from this smartphone, Acer is also readying an Android device, that should also hit the market in 2009. [via gsmdome]
