Big Wheel All Grown Up - SS Trike to enter AMD World Championship

Big Wheel All Grown Up - SS Trike to enter AMD World ChampionshipSocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

With the AMD Official World Championship for Custom Bike Building in Sturgis right around the corner, now's the time we look forward to some real innovation coming from the American V-twin crowd - just not quite the kind of forward-thinking we see here. Don't get us wrong, we loved our Big Wheel as a kid - bombing up and down the driveway and perfecting the art of the powerslide - but we're not entirely sold on the idea as adults.

In any case, the SS Trike from Olmax Fabrication is powered by the buyer's choice of air-cooled V-twin engines from Ultima, S&S or TP. That giant hoop up front measures 24 inches in diameter, easily dwarfing the classically-cool 14-inch American Racing rims out back. Those twin rear wheels receive power through either a six-speed manual gearbox or optional automatic transmission developed using well-known GM Powerglide parts that should therefore be more than up to snuff in this application. Through a quick-change set of seats and foot controls, the SS Trike can reportedly accommodate riders ranging from 5-foot tall to 6-foot-2.

Samsung announced 8 Series HDTVs

Samsung normally doesn't go out of its way to release a new line of HDTVs in the middle of the year, but we guess the 8 Series of HDTVs proved to be too important to be delayed till next year. The 8500 models will come with new technology that features newer, pure white LED backlights alongside local dimming capability that will work in tandem, boosting the dynamic contrast ratio up to an unprecedented 7,000,000:1. This is a couple million more compared to the 8000 model, which is its predecessor by the way. Apart from that, the newer LCD display will further improve brightness and visibility in ambient light, while the inclusion of a Natural mode attempts to replicate color behavior of normally more vibrant plasma displays without sacrificing its brightness. Other features include 240Hz panels and a response time of 2ms. You can pick up the 46" and 55" sets for $3,600 and $4,500, respectively as they ship later this September.

This Atom 330-powered computer is able to hold up to 4GB of RAM (it'll need all the memory it can muster if it were to handle high definition video, that's for sure), a 2.5" SATA hard drive slot (you've got to provide the hard drive yourself here), HDMI out, S/PDIF and half a dozen USB 2.0 ports for connectivity options. The Valore ION 330-DB will retail for €297, which makes it a pretty affordable HTPC candidate for your living rooms.

iPhone 3.1 beta 3 - New FeaturesSocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Apple has released firmware 3.1 beta 3 to developers. The firmware has been found to have a few cool new features (see list below).

Note: If you are a developer, you will need to update to 3.1 beta 3 before July 29th because 3.1 beta 2 expires at midnight on the 28th.

• Copy and paste videos - You can now copy and paste videos in your e-mails. There is a 15 MB limit for copying/pasting videos or images. This limit is most likely there to save bandwidth usage (see demo video below).
• Tethering counter - If you go to Settings -> Genral -> Usage on your iPhone, you’ll notice Tethering data which shows how much tethering you’ve used. Note: Tethering is not available to AT&T users yet.
• Springboard icons - When you hold down the Springboard icons they no longer vibrate.
• Baseband updated - The baseband has been updated to 05.11.04.
• Camera API additions

AT&T Releases Free SocialNet Tool For E71x And SurgeSocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Today, AT&T released a new free application called SocialNet, which was built by iSkoot. SocialNet provides access to Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace, in a carousel view. The application can be downloaded from theAT&T MediaMall, which is likely the only time you’ll ever go there. Currently, the application is only available to branded handsets, such as the E71x and the Nokia Surge.

The program makes it possible for users to communicate among their social networks and track events in real time, as well as get live news feeds from nearly 3 dozen sources. You can also login to your Twitter account to see tweets, replies, and your Facebook to see and set your status update. On most phones, you can also get notified of new updates, even when the application is closed.

Here’s a video of the app in action on the LG Neon (not a Symbian-powered phone)

It is currently unclear whether the application will use your data connection, or if it taps into your messaging plan, as well. You can download the application for free from the AT&T MediaMall, and we’ll try to get ahold of the installer, and update this post if/when we can. If you have the Nokia E71x or the Surge, please download the app and try to store it on your device, so you can email us the installer (or post it somewhere and send us the link).

Averatec N3400 13 inch Aluminum Notebook

We don't usually associate aluminum and cheap, but the Averatec N3400 has caught our attention, as 13.3" is seen by many as the sweet spot between comfort and portability, and at 3.8lbs, this computer is on the light side, for this category. It looks like the outer shell is made of aluminum, but the rest of the casing seems quite "normal". However, for $799 or so, here's what you get:

  • Intel T3400 2.16Ghz (a CULV would have been cooler)
  • 13.3" 1280x1024 with 1.3MP webcam
  • 3GB DDR 2m 800Mhz (8GB max)
  • 250GB hdd, DVD drive
  • 3x USB, 3.5mm audio in/out, VGA
  • Multi-format card reader
  • WiFi-N, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet

Now, we wonder how good the battery life is and if it has a backlit keyboard option.

Century have announced an update to their range of USB LCD companion displays, in the shape of the Plus One LCD-8000UD. Ostensibly identical in functionality to last December’s LCD-8000U, the 8-inch 800 x 600 display now includes DVI as well as USB connectivity.

Century plus one LCD 8000UD

That port addition now means that you can choose the flexibility of using a USB connection, which relies on the DisplayLink virtual graphics adapter, or the reduced CPU impact of a normal DVI output. While DisplayLink means no secondary video output is necessary, thus making for a more convenient connection, the software required can cause underpowered machines to slow down even further.

It also means that the LCD-8000UD is plug-and-play compatible with any machine that has a DVI port, rather than demanding software be installed. The Century Japan Plus One LCD-8000UD is set to launch in August, priced at around 16,500 yen ($174).

Samsung Omnia 2 Interface Video DemoSocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Samsung Omnia 2 relies on the TouchWiz 2.0 interface, a very neat TouchFLO 3D alternative, that makes HTC and Samsung compete in yet another segment. Here’s what Omnia 2’s interface is all about, in various menus and modes of use.

From the get-go, we learn that the new Omnia device comes with an alarm that’s triggered even if the handset has been shut down. TouchWiz 2.0 is a pretty fluid UI, but it looks a bit old, specially if we have a glance at its icons. You’ll get the chance to use a QWERTY, semi QWERTY and numeric virtual keypad, depending on the menu you’re in.

Next, the video demo takes us through the Calendar menu, then through a bunch of widgets that can be customized and moved around. Next comes the Inbox menu, storing both SMS messages and e-mails, that you can view by simply sweeping the screen to alternate between the two kinds of messaging options. Omnia 2’s accelerometer allows the user to rotate the screen, although this move will prove to be a bit laggy.

Last, we see the calculator, camera and media interface in action, the latter being some sort of iPhone-like Coverflow, while the camera menu performed unexpectedly well.

Still, it is a big purchase, so while you might want to grab it before the price change, it would be wise to take a close look at it before you do, because once you buy it, you can't get your money back.
